Spanish

In Portstewart Primary School we believe that the earlier you start learning a language the better and that by learning a foreign language children can be given a stronger sense of their relationship to others in the world.

Spanish is taught throughout the school, starting in Nursery, with each class receiving a 20-30 minute lesson each week. Lessons are fun and informal, focusing on games, songs and discussions as the main methods of teaching. Children learn that their mother tongue is only one of many languages spoken by others, both in this country and abroad and therefore they can begin to appreciate the effort made to communicate in English by those for whom English is not their first language.

We hope, also, that the programme will develop positive attitudes, in our children, towards the learning of languages and that it will form a sound basis for further study at key stage 3 and beyond.
