As an Eco-School we are always looking for ways to raise awareness of environmental issues and reduce our impact on the environment. Plastic pollution is currently one of the biggest environmental concerns and impacts on the seas and beaches worldwide, including our local beaches. We are excited to announce that Portstewart Primary School and Nursery Unit, along with St. Colum’s Primary and Dominican College, are embarking on a project that will not only raise awareness of the current state of our beaches and seas, but will also reduce the amount of non-recyclable plastic being sent to land fill. Each child in Portstewart Primary and St. Colum’s is asked to make an Eco Brick. These bricks will then be transformed into three sculptures by Dominican College and displayed on Portstewart Strand on World Oceans’ Day. Each school will then receive one of the sculptures to go on permanent display in their school.

What is an Eco Brick?

An Eco Brick, is an empty, clean plastic bottle filled with unrecyclable plastics. To clarify, children should fill their Eco Brick with plastics that aren’t recycled in blue bins. The bottle should be so full that is hard and cannot be crushed under your foot.

What can go inside the Eco Brick?

  • Food wrappers/ sweet wrappers.
  • Some soft plastics from toy packaging, such as bubble wrap.
  • Any soft, clean plastic that is currently not recycled in our blue bins What cannot go in the Eco Brick?
  • Food waste.
  • Plastics that can already be recycled.
  • Metal.
  • Glass We would appreciate your support for this exciting project and ask that all Eco Bricks are brought into school by Friday 5th April 2019. The bricks will be collected by Lisa McCaughan from the National Trust the following week.
